Interview : FM Campers

That was fun! FM Campers and I shot the shit for bit about their new EP, "Bear in a Box". I got kinda silly with the questions to throw them off, but they stayed on point with some good personal and artistic insight. You can download the album for free, but then you'd be missing out on the limited edition hand painted case that comes with the CD. Music after the jump:

Describe the new EP in 3 words.

Anthony: Spacious, Warm, Violet.

Jason: Abrasive, Comforting, Organic

Shaun: Planned, Improvisational, Textured

Great, now tell us how the album relates to these words.

Anthony: The sound is expansive and encompassing, like a bear hug. It is violet because that is the signature of color that is derived from the tonal direction. It feels dark, yet utlra-highlighted in the corners of the overall composition.

Jason: At times it's brash and unrelenting. Other times it's controlled and approachable. And lastly you, including ourselves, are not sure what is going to happen next. It breathes its own life and we respond to it.

Shaun: There are practiced songs that have definite structure, but there are parts within those songs that are free and open. It is recorded as one continuous take without "breaks" in between the songs, like a dj set. And the parts in between the songs are always un-planned and improvisational. Those are sometimes my most favorite parts.

Album : FM Campers - Bear in a Box

I had a wonderful Thanksgiveitome, and I hope you did too. I spilled a glass of wine on my girlfriend's grandmother's white table cloth while reaching for the taters. I made it worth the while when I served up the french pressed Gorilla coffee I brought from Brooklyn. And then there was this one time at bandcamp...

I disovered that I love pecan pie and the FM Campers over the holiday break. I'm so glad to hear their new song "Bear in a Box" because I after I posted Maytown, I listened to it on repeat for many moons and wished and wished to hear more new stuff...and occasionally went back to their old band, Ice Cream Creatures. They have a physical release "Bear in a Box" for $10 that I will either buy online here or patiently wait until they play in NYC and buy it then, because I know it should be soon. Here's a description of what you get with for your hard earned, facebook browsing money:

the Bear in a Box e.p. is now available. Each CD is hand-painted by a band member and/or slave for your aesthetic pleasure. $10 if we mail it to you. Pay what you want if you come to a show. Yes, even nothing, cheapskate. But get one anyway.

Check their website and myspace for tour and show dates, but if you look around enough, you'll find a few more awesome tunes. And why the hell not, I dug up a live performance from utube of their song "Maytown" for you also. Hold your ears for the first second.

Listen : FM Campers - Maytown

Dear FM Campers:

My band would like to play a show with you when you can make it from Austin TX and come to New York. Your music is wonderful, especially this song, "Maytown" that I found on em411.  Thanks Papergoose! I'm in love with the siney bendy synth layered on top of the huge drums and the wide open vocals. I've had a conflicted heart for the last few weeks and this is what I call music therapy. Moby knows what I'm talking about. Sound production +10, Awesomeness production +10!
